UK Driving Theory Test & Practical Test: Complete Guide 2025
Passing the UK driving test is a two-part process: the theory test and the practical test. Both are rigorous and designed to ensure you are safe on the roads.
Step 1: The Theory Test
You cannot book a practical test until you pass this. It consists of two sections:
Multiple Choice
50 questions covering the Highway Code and traffic signs. You need 43/50 to pass.
Hazard Perception
14 video clips featuring everyday road scenes. You must spot developing hazards early to score points.
Step 2: The Practical Test
Lasting about 40 minutes, this test examines your general driving and ability to reverse the vehicle safely. It includes an "independent driving" section where you follow Sat Nav directions or traffic signs.
Booking Strategy
Waiting times can be long. It is often wise to book your theory test as soon as you start learning, and your practical test as soon as your instructor says you are ready. Use the official GOV.UK service to avoid booking fees.
